Got drunk
and scribbled something in my notebook.
Woke up
and couldn't make out my writing.
Drank three bottles of Soju
and I could read what I'd written -
Don't drink again.

창경궁_116_huck7

Barbed-wire-in-a-tree787

Inspired by the PEN Translation Slam @ http://www.pen.org/blog/?p=1094. JWC & SKR’s translations are so much better though.

Trees by the Edge
- Jeong Kkeut-byeol

Growing by blending in their bodies with the barbed wires,
Growing by pushing in the chains,
Growing by embracing the entrenched shrapnel,
Growing, having swallowed railings or fences,
I've seen such nameless trees.

Things that squeezed them in,
when they had no strength to push away,
they must have embraced.
Things that blocked them,
with no foothold to leap over,
they might as well have sucked in,
aware that they would become searing scars.

So, oh twenty first century,
Let us not love too deeply.
